You may have seen this key ingredient in some of your favorite oral care products such as your toothpaste, gum, and mints. While the name may sound unknown, sorbitol is actually a natural ingredient that is often used in the formulation of many dental products.
Sorbitol is a six carbon sugar alcohol that naturally derives from various fruits and vegetables. So not only can it be found in your personal care items, but due to its low calories and naturally sweet function, it is often also used in sweets and baked goods too.
But back to toothpaste. Now why is sorbitol in your favorite oral care? Let’s find out.
Helps the Prevention of Tooth Decay
Sorbitol is non-cariogenic, meaning that it does not promote tooth decay. This is because it is not broken down by oral bacteria, which further disintegrate sugars and starches to release acids that promote cavities.
Sweetens Your Product
While we often associate added sweetness with leading to tooth decay, sorbitol does not contribute towards dental caries as it is a naturally occurring humectant. If you’ve decided to add sorbitol to something other than oral care, note that it is 60% of the sweetness of sucrose, ⅓ of the calories and it is often used by diabetics!

As we’ve proudly mentioned, sorbitol is a natural ingredient that can pretty much do it all. That’s why Active Wow uses this ingredient into our newest product launch – We’re always searching for the most innovative product to bring to you.
